A heritage plaque records: St James Anglican Church - St James Anglican Church was built in 1900. It was very aptly named as it was erected by three local men each of whose Christian name was James. These men were James Bolton, James Kelly and James Templar. - The two pencil pines at the front were donated and planted by Mr Tickner. In the early years the church's minister came from Stawell every fortnight to conduct services to full congregations and a Sunday School was conducted by Mrs Edwards from Glenorchy. - The church boasts a magnificent font of pure marble donated by local shopkeeper Mrs Alice Campbell in memory of a daughter who died in 1921. Described as 'fit for a cathedral' the original one was imported from Italy but by the time it reached Glenorchy it was found to be cracked. It had to be sent back to be replaced. - The church's architectural construction is described as federation carpenter gothic style. |
