Built of bluestone in 1885/6, St Gregory the Great Catholic Church was opened on 11/3/1866. Those in attendance included, His Lordship the Right Rev Dr Goold, Bishop of Melbourne, the Right Rev Dr Shiel, Bishop Elect of Adelaide, Dean Slattery of Warrnambool and Rev P Riordan of Portland.
The church celebrated 150 years of the Catholic community in Heywood, on 6/3/2016, with an anniversary Mass led by Bishop Paul Bird and Fr Gregory Tait. See Note below for more detail.
