Foundation Stone Notes: | Foundation stone records: This Stone was laid - To The Glory Of God - on 12th October 1929 - By Councillor - E G Batchelder JP - of Bendigo A heritage plaque records: The present Uniting Church built in 1929 represents the culmination of the amalgamation of the Wesleyans and the United Free Methodists in 1898, to achieve a Methodist Church. This church represented a permanent place for the Methodists following years of poor or temporary accommodation...In the early days of Heathcote there were several Wesleyan and United Free Methodist churches in the district, and it is believed that the first building on this site consisted of two former churches joined to form the old wooden church (pictured) in the late 1880s-1890s. The remodelled church building sat further towards the back of this site and remained in use until the 1990s, long after the present brick church was built. The old building served as a Sunday school, Girl Guide Hall, youth centre and reception hall. - Yet another change was to occur in 1969[?] with the amalgamation of the Methodists and the Presbyterians to form the Uniting Church of Australia. In Heathcote the transition began in early 1968 when the united senior classes of both Sunday schools were held at the Presbyterian site, and the junior classes at the Methodist site. Both churches remained in use until 1977 when the Presbyterian closed in favour of this site. |
