A history board at the church site records: History of St John's - 'St John's Church is one of the oldest buildings in Metung. It was built in 1891 in the grounds of the King family property 'Mairburn', in the present Mairburn Road area. - John Parker King was the grandson of Governor King, 3rd Governor of the Colony of New South Wales. In the 1880s John brought his family to live in Metung. He built what is now the nave of this church for use as a chapel by his family, and welcomed the people of the fledgling village to also attend. The first service was held on Christmas Day 1891.- A little later, with his brother Essington King and friend Herbert Henty, purchased this land and gave it to the Church of England. John's idea was to move the chapel to this site in 1885[?], before it could be done, John died. However, his widow, Antionette King, was able to supervise the completion of the plan. - The chapel was moved by two bullock teams, the interior lined and a chancel and vestry added for the total cost of 75.15.00 [pounds]. Mrs King also arranged for a pulpit, chancel chairs, prayer desk and altar rails to be made in blackwood and this beautiful furniture is still in use today. - The completed church was opened and dedicated by the Bishop of Melbourne on 11 November, 1897.' |
