Heritage plaque records: St John's Lutheran Church - In 1874 the first Lutheran services in Minyip were held in Mr A Price's home. In 1875 a wooden church was named St John's was erected on land donated by Mr C Petering at Kirchheim, (church home). In 1875 a day school of wattle and daub construction with a thatched roof and a teacher's residence was also built near the church. A violent storm on 1st September 1889 demolished the church and school. - In June 1889 a new school was bullt and in December 1887(?) the new Gothic style church to seat 200 was dedicated...In 1933 it was finally decided to move the church from Kirchheim to the position beside the hall [in Minyip]...In March 1935 the...church... was removed... with the help of a steam engine. The hall was also extended and moved closer to the north fence as well as improvements to the Church which was dedicated in August 1935 [at Minyip]... |
