An historical plaque records: Welsh Church - One of two Welsh Calvinistic Churches still active in Victoria, this simple Gothic building was designed in 1871 by the architect Charles Webb on the site of the Welsh Chapel built in 1856. With the support of the Reverend Dr Egryn Jones, the Queen Victoria Memorial Hospital for Women began in the church hall in 1896.

The church also contains a number of memorials to earlier ministers and church members, some in Welsh and some in English.

A plaque records: First in Welsh, then - This plaque was unveilded by - Mrs E Warburton and Mrs E J Hughes - on July 20th 2003 - to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the church. 'For he hath strengthened the bars and the gates and hath blessed - thy children with thee'. Ps 147 v 13.

A plaque records: VMWS - Victorian Medical Women's Society Inc - Women doctors of the British Empire were denied the right to officially enlist but - these six courageous Melbourne women doctors served as surgeons and medical - officers during World War One with voluntary organisations. - Their individual determination to serve, their dedication and bravery saved the lives - of hundreds of soldiers on the Western and Eastern Fronts. - We honour the contribution of : Dr Hilda Bull (Esson, Dale) ~ England; Dr Rachel Champion (Shaw) ~ England; Dr Mary De Garis ~ Serbia; Dr Vera Scantlebury (Brown) ~ England: Dr Helen Sexton ~ France; Dr Isabella Younger (Ross) ~ England: - An inspiration to all.

A plaque records:...In memory of Dr Constance Stone, the first - Australian women to qualify as a medical - practioner. Because Australian medical schools - were closed to women, she studied overseas. In - 1896, together with some of the first women - medical graduates of the University of Melbourne, - she established the Queen Victoria Hospital - Melbourne, initially as an outpatients' clinic in St. - David's Hall, Welsh Church, La Trobe Street.

The current Welsh Church building was opened in December 1871. The church began about 15/12/1852 after an advertisement to hold a Welsh service was placed in the local newspaper.
