A heritage sign records: Murrabit Catholic Church - Catholic services commenced in the early 1900s in the Chapel Crossing North School. The Parish Priest drove out from Kerang in a gig once a month to say Mass for the isolated settlers. In the mid 1930s, the Murrabit Schoold was used for Mass once a month and in late 1937 was transferred to the Murrabit Public Hall. - During the 1939~1945 war many Italian Prisoners of War attended Mass. The Parish Priest would preach a sermon in English, then in Italian making most times a very lengthy service! - Land was purchased for the erection of a church building in the early 1950s and it was suggested that money be raised by running a talent quest. Two successful quests were held. A calf rearing scheme was also started and when the calves were sold a substantial sum of money was added to the church funds. - The church was opened in December 1961 and named St Francis Xavier. The Ladies Committee served afternoon tea in the Murrabit Hall following the ceremony. The Church was built by Laursens and Mahers, both local building firms.
