Nelson Presbyterian Church - Former

A plaque on fenceline records: Many of Nelson's early settlers were of Scottish heritage and members of the Presbyterian church. The first church service held in Nelson is recorded as having been preached in 1875 by the Reverand R.A. Caldwell in a room at the Nelson Hotel, then kept by Mr Andrew Brown. In 1878 preparations began to build a church. But it was along time to fruition. From 1874, The Reverand Williams of Wern began holding regular services in the school room. In 1908 land was purchased and Mr Thomas Hall, a Scot from Galashiels, was appointed Architect. Other buildings of note with which he was involved at that period included Yallum House Penola, Mount Gambier Waterworks and Jens Hotel. Local stone was quarried from a nearby paddock. Note the neat Gothic design, The stone building relieved by white Quion edgings. The church was officially opened on August 20th, 1910. People came from neighbouring towns and the church was packed to maximum capacity. Following the opening service, afternoon tea was served and a recital was held in the church in the evening. Upgradings in 1984 resulted in a new Sunday School, a porch, supporting bell poles and a second hand electric organ.
