A marble tablet records: This corner stone of St Stephen's Church to be consecrated for the worship of The Holy Blessed and Glorious Trinity according to the Theses and Ceremonies of the Church of England was laid this 24th day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty five being the 18th year of the reign of Her Most Gracious Majesty Queen Victoria of England, by The Venerable Henry Thomas Braim, Doctor of Divinity, Archdeacon of Portland.

The St Stephen's Anglican Church, Portland is part of the Parish of Lower Glenelg (with St John's, Heywwod and St James, Tyrendarra) and the Diocese of Ballarat. St Stephen's Portland is Victoria's oldest Anglican Church, its history dating back to the town's initial founding in 1834.
