Foundation Stone Notes: | Foundation stone records: This stone - was laid by - The Very Rev Dean Davy - 6th Sept 1898. A plaque records: The first building used for mass was on the property of Mr and Mrs Underwood on High Street and - was used by all denominations. The Rev Father Scanlon travelled by horseback from Beechworth for - 2 or 3 services a year, mostly on weekdays - In 1872 the National Bank, a slab building with a shingled roof near the railway line, was used for - mass with the priest travelling from Wangaratta - A wooden chapel was built later near the present church and dedicaterd to St Attracta. The old - woodenb building was later removed to Rothsey. - After much hard work the present church was opened debt free in October 1898 by - Archbishop Revelle at a cost of 1200 pounds. - The Very Rev Dean Davy offered to marry the first couple in the new church free of - charge. Mr and Mrs McHugh of Benalla availed themselves of the offer. - Violet Town History Group 2016. |
