Foundation Stone Notes: | A heritage plaque records: Holy Trinity Anglican Church - The first Anglican services were held in the Denominational school (run by the Anglicans) which was situated on the block of land behind the church, fronting Kerr and Ridge Streets. The roof of this building was of shingles and leaked, so people had to use umbrellas during services (What about the school children). - Rev Hose the minister at the time, visited each miner as he worked in his claim and asked him for a donation of time or money to help build a new church. Time donated was credited at ?/6d per day, and counted as part of the local contribution to the cost of the new building. The diocese provided a grant and the cornerstone of the new church was laid on 14th May 1866. - In March 1909 one wall of the church was blown down in a storm. A new chancel was built (to replace the damaged wall?) and was consecrated on 14th September 1909. - On 4th March, 1898 Mr Samuel and Mrs Rinder donated a new hall to the church in memory of their daughter. - Albert Jacka VC was baptised in the church on 28th July 1897. |
