A historical plaque records: St Patrick's Church - Dedicated by the Bishop of Ballarat, this was the first Catholic Church in St Arnaud. It is a pretty building of light bricks with white bricks freely included to provide contrast. In 1876, Father Dwyer was appointed the first priest, and his parish covered a wide area stretching from Stuart Mill to Morton Plains and west to Banyena and Marnoo. He was succeeded by Father R Scanlon, during whose time a fine brick presbytery was constructed. When a new Church was constructed in 1907, it became St Patrick's Hall. Originally it fronted onto McMahon Street, but the land there was later sold for housing, so the front entry of the church is now at the rear of the remaining block. Used for a long time as a recreation hall, it was renovated as a modern residence until it was purchased and used by the Salvation Army. |
