Foundation Stone Notes: | The foundation stone of the first cathedral "was laid by Mr Justice Dashwood, the Governemnt Resident, on 12 July 1902. He actually laid it three times, as it was twice dug up by vandals, who possibly thought that the bottle buried beneath it contained money (which it did not)". [See Note 1]. After cyclone Tracy (1974) the Cathedral was rebuilt and dedicated as recorded on a plaque: Christ Church Cathedral - was consecrated by - The Rt. Revd. K B Mason, BA. Dip. Theol, THL - First Bishop of the Northern Territory - Sunday 13th March 1977 - in the Presence of - The Most Revd. and Rt. Hon. FD Coggan, DD - Archbishop of Canterbury - Rector and Canon Residentiary - Revd CM Wood, BA, THL - Wardens - Mr TG Irvine, MPS, Ph C - Mrs JH Prickett - Mr PG Spillett, JP. A plaque on the porch added to the original church building: A M D G - This Gate and The Porch - were added to Christ Church in 1944 - by - Royal Australian Navy and Northern Territory Force - as a tribute to the memory - of those members of all services - who died whilst on active service - in the Northern Territory - during the Second World War 1939-??. |
