An historical plaque records; After a visit in 1846 by Augustus Short, first Bishop of Adelaide, whose Bible is still in use here, his brother-in-law, S P Phillips of Culham House gave him twelve acres of land and started a fund for the building of a church... by 1852 the walls were built and roofed in iron. But almost at once the church fell into complete ruin during the absence of the Phillips family in England...Work began again on their return and it was opened for worship on 19th July 1857...the consecration...was delayed till September 1895, when it was consecrated by the Rt Revd C O L Riley 3rd Bishop and Ist Archbishop (of Perth)...Today the church is little used, but it stands in all its quiet beauty, a memorial to the faith and courage of the pioneers of this district; many of whom lie buried here in certain hope of a joyful resurrection". |
