The former Gwalla Church building was constructed in 1861. It was the first church building to be constructed in Northampton, and the cemertery was the first established in the district. They were donated by Joseph Horrocks, an ex-convict, convict ship’s surgeon and important figure in the development of Gwalla. He had a specific stipulation that the church be non-denominational. The building was partly demolished in 1929. Today the  site contains the Gwalla Church and Cemetery comprising the church ruins in a stone walled yard, and the random rubble stone walled cemetery with its associated graves.

The Gwalla Church served the community for may years before being replaced by the building of individual churches by the various denominations. The final service was held in 1913. Although a church service is now held once a year at the site.
