An information board records: Dominican Convent - Chapel of St Hyacinth - Built during 1921/22, this is the smallest church designed by the renowned priest and architect Father John Cyril Hawes, who was parish priest for the Murchison Goldfields and Mid West from 1915-1938. Yalgoo was the most distant town of his scattered parish, which he initially referred to as 'the end of the earth' and a place wher he 'just flopped about & struggled to exist' due to the heat. This inter-war Romanesque style masonary chapel with a terracotta tiled roof & timber framed bell tower is one of the 23 remaining buildings designed and built by Hawes in the Mid West & Gascoyne regions. The chapel was constructed by local builder Hendry Cutton Jermy, whose work as a carpenter and builder is significant in the Yalgoo district. Following the closure of the convent and its school in 1949, the chapel fell into despair. In 1981, the Shire of Yalgoo reopnend the restored chapel.

An Australian Biceniennial project plaque records: Monsignor Hawes Heritage Trail - Chapel of St Hyacinth - In the early 1920s John Hawes brought the Dominican Sisters to Yalgoo to run the school here. He built this chapel for them in 1920-1922, often travelling on horseback from Mullewa to assisit with its construction...

The former St Hyacinth's Chapel, Yalgoo is in the Diocese of Geraldton. The chapel was built for the Dominican Sisters who were brought to the town to run a school in the early 1920s. The school closed in 1949 and the chapel closed and fell into disrepair. It was restored and re-opened in 1981 by the Shire of Yalgoo. More historical information/photographs of the former chapel/congregation are invited. Photographs uploaded 23/5/2024.
