Toodyay was known as Newcastle between 1860 and 1910. The original townsite of "Old Toodyay" having been relocated to "Newcastle", its current location, in the 1860s after flooding in the 1850s.
The first St John the Baptist Catholic Church was built in 1863, after the relocation from old Toodyay. The foundation stone of which was laid in January 1863 by Father Martin Giver assisted by Father Francis Salvado and Parish Priest Venanzio Garrido from the New Norcia mission. The building was completed and blessed by Christmas 1864.
The current building is the second St John the Baptist Catholic Church in Toodyay. It replaced the earlier church of the same name located across the road, and built in 1863/4, which had need of major repair. The current church was completed in 1963 and consecrated on 17/11/1963 by M McKeon, Auxiliary Bishop of Perth. The original, 1863 St John the Baptist Catholic Church, was closed, at the same time as the new one was opened, and is now privately owned.(Information from Wikipedia).
More historical information/photographs of the churches/congregation are invited. Photographs uploaded 17/10/2018.
