The former Church of Sancta Maria was completed in 1858 and blessed and opened in January 1859 by Bishop Serra.
When the townsite of old Toodyay was relocated to "Newcastle" in the 1860's, (renamed Toodyay about 1910) due to flooding, the church which also operated a school eventually closed about 1867. The building was re-opened in 1885 as a government school, which operated until October 1898. It was then used as a private home until the occupant died in 1907, after which time the building fell into disrepair. (Information from Wikipedia).
When the townsite was moved to 'Newcastle' a new church named St John the Baptist Catholic Church was built there. See separate entry.
More historical information/photographs of the former church/congregation are invited. Photograph uploaded 17/10/2018.
