Foundation Stone Notes: | Foundation stone records: For God's Glory H O Beeck laid this stone - 12.2.08 - W Kennedy Pastor - B Hobart Sec. An information board records: The Baptist Church - This lovely church, with its extraordinary built-in baptism tank, was constructed in 1908 in a flurry of community busy-bees. Inspired by the charismatic Reverend William Kennedy, locals gathered stone from a hill north of town and used timber and iron donated to the cause to build a church that would 'not only fulfil the local need, but would be a focus for the surrounding districts.' - Designed by local farmer Henry Kippin, the church was completed almost debt-free, a remarkable achievement at a time when most community buildings were saddled with crushing loans. For decades the local Presbyterian congregation also used it as a place of worship, and it was home-base for a preaching circuit that included Cartmeticup, Wardering, Boyerine and Dumbleyung. The last service was held in August 1997. A notice board on the verge of the footpath, on the day of photographing, had a hand written notice recording: - Woodanilling Community Church - 'For God hath not given us the spirirt of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind'. 2 Timothy 1:7. |
